Importance and Significance of Eid al-Adha

Eid al-Adha or Eid al-Adha is one of the two biggest religious festivals of the Muslim community. Sacrifice is an important act of worship. Qurbani has been made obligatory on all able-bodied Muslims.

According to Islamic Shari’ah, “Sacrifice of a lawful animal in the name of Allah within a specified date in the hope of attaining the nearness and pleasure of Allah is called Qurbani.”

Sacrifice has been going on since the time of creation of the world i.e. Hazrat Adam (A). When there was a disagreement between the sons of Adam (A.S.), Habil and Qabil regarding marriage, Allah ordered them to sacrifice a lawful animal with sincerity.

Later, Hazrat Ibrahim (A) prepared to sacrifice his beloved son Ismail (A) on the command of Allah. But in the glory of Allah he sacrificed a dumba instead of his son.

Since then, the Muslim Ummah has been performing animal sacrifice every year between the 10th and 12th of the month of Zilhaj.

Qurbani Sunnah or Wajib?

Qurbani is an important act of worship in the Islamic Shari’ah and the importance of its operation is mentioned in the Qur’an and Hadith. Qurbani is certainly an important act of worship but Qurbani is not for everyone. Sacrifice is only for him who can afford it. However, Qurbani can never be considered obligatory.

The Prophet of Allah, Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) once said, “He who does not offer Qurbani despite his ability, should not come to the Eidgah.”

This means that sacrifice is very important. If you can, you must sacrifice. But if you can’t afford it and can’t make the sacrifice, don’t be upset. Because it is not obligatory.

How long an Qurbani?

In Islamic terms, halal animal sacrifice can be done from the morning of the 10th day of Zilhaj to the sunset of the 12th day in order to gain Allah’s pleasure. However, the sacrifice must be performed after the Eid prayer on the morning of the 10th day of Zilhajj.

Sacrifice will not be accepted before Eid prayers. Sacrifice should be for the pleasure of Allah. Neither originality nor sociability is intended. It will not be accepted if you sacrifice a cow worth lakhs of rupees to show people off.

About Qurbani, Allah mentions in verse 37 of Surah Hajj:

“None of their flesh and blood reaches Allah, but your piety reaches Him.”
